Mogadishu, Somalia – The Commander of the Somali Police Force visited a police officer who was injured in a confrontation at the Parliament building earlier today. The officer sustained injuries after being punched in the face by a Member of Parliament (MP) during a scuffle at the podium, where the Speaker of the House was seated.
The skirmish erupted when the police officer attempted to block the MP from approaching the speaker’s podium. In a strong statement, the Police Commander condemned the act of violence, calling it an unacceptable assault on law enforcement officers who were simply performing their duties.
“It is deeply surprising and troubling that members of the legislature, who are elected to represent the people, would resort to such violence,” the commander said. “This act damages the dignity of our security forces and undermines the respect for law and order.”
The Commander praised the professionalism of the police officers involved, acknowledging their patience and discipline in handling the tense situation without further escalation. “Our officers displayed maturity and restraint, which is a testament to the high standards of conduct expected from our force,” he said.
Gen. Asad Diano further announced that the incident would be formally referred to both the Parliament’s Ethics Committee and the National Prosecutor’s Office for further investigation and legal action. “Those responsible for this violent act will face the full consequences of the law,” he emphasized.
The incident has raised concerns about the level of violence in Somalia’s political sphere, and the Somali Police Force has vowed to uphold law and order in the face of such challenges.
