Baidoa, Somalia – Today, officials from the Southwest State Ministry of Health successfully completed the first phase of a training program focused on the use of new immunization equipment. The training is part of the state’s initiative to enhance health services, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
The equipment, known as the “INDIGO cold chain,” is designed to support the safe transportation and storage of vaccines. The device is highly effective, capable of keeping vaccines safe for up to five days without requiring any energy, making it particularly valuable for mobile clinics and remote health centers.
In partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and GAVI, the Southwest Ministry of Health plans to distribute these devices to all health centers across the state, including those in difficult-to-reach districts. The initiative is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare services and provide quality immunization to local communities.
The training comes at a critical time, as Southwest State is facing a dry spell that could potentially escalate into a humanitarian crisis. Despite these challenges, the Ministry remains committed to achieving the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of “Good Health and Well-being,” ensuring that quality healthcare services reach all regions of Southwest State.
This new cold chain technology is expected to significantly improve immunization coverage, helping to protect communities and contribute to the broader goal of improving public health in Somalia.
