Arusha, Tanzania – November 30, 2024 — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia delivered a landmark address at the East African Economic Cooperation (EAC) Summit, marking Somalia’s first participation as a full member of the regional organization. The summit, held in Arusha, Tanzania, also saw Somalia take on a key leadership role within the EAC, with Somalia elected as the Secretary General for the upcoming year, while Kenya assumes the role of Chairperson.
In his speech, President Mohamud praised the cooperation and progress achieved by the EAC since its establishment, highlighting the importance of regional collaboration in fostering economic growth, social integration, and stability across East Africa. “Somalia is committed to aligning with the EAC’s vision for 2050 and will play an active role in shaping the future of our shared economic and social development,” President Mohamud stated.
The President further emphasized that Somalia would contribute significantly to the EAC’s goals in areas such as economic development, cultural exchange, trade, and regional security. He reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to regional integration, noting that Somalia’s participation in the EAC would open new doors for economic opportunities, trade partnerships, and cultural exchanges with neighboring countries.
Key discussions at the summit included the role of technology in regional development, tax harmonization, security cooperation, and the strengthening of the EAC Court. The summit also provided an opportunity for member states to discuss strategies for fostering greater collaboration on common challenges, such as infrastructure development, sustainable growth, and cross-border trade.
Earlier this year, Somalia became the 8th member of the East African Community, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to integrate more fully into regional economic and political affairs. This membership is expected to enhance Somalia’s ties with neighboring countries and provide greater opportunities for economic and social development.
In a separate bilateral meeting, President Mohamud also held important talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu, focusing on strengthening the relationship between Somalia and Tanzania. The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including economic cooperation, security, and mutual support for development projects in both countries.
As Somalia steps into its new leadership role within the EAC, the country is poised to play a central part in driving the region’s vision for economic cooperation, stability, and prosperity.
