Toyota, Japan – October 16, 2025 — Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Interior, Hon. Abdihakim Ashkir, represented the country at the International Mayors Forum held in Toyota City, Japan. The global event brought together delegates from 39 countries and 68 cities to discuss urban governance, sustainable development, and local resilience.
In his remarks, Deputy Minister Ashkir highlighted Somalia’s remarkable strides in governance reform and climate resilience, emphasizing the nation’s determination to rebuild and innovate despite decades of conflict, droughts, and floods.
“Somalia’s story is one of resilience and renewal. Through collaborative governance and community-driven initiatives, we are building stronger local institutions and climate-adaptive cities,” he said.

The forum served as a platform for Somalia to share lessons on inclusive governance, local empowerment, and climate adaptation, while exploring partnerships with global cities and development actors.
