Mogadishu, Somalia – November 30, 2024 – The Deputy Chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Dr. Ahmed Abdi Adan, officially launched a vital capacity-building training program on disaster preparedness today at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) in Mogadishu. The training, which aims to enhance the disaster response capacity of SoDMA personnel, is generously funded by Qatar Charity.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Ahmed Abdi Adan emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness and the need for effective emergency response mechanisms to protect the Somali population from the devastating impact of natural and man-made disasters. “This training is crucial in strengthening the ability of our team to respond efficiently to emergencies, mitigate disaster risks, and protect vulnerable communities,” said Dr. Adan.
The training, which is part of SoDMA’s ongoing efforts to build capacity and improve disaster response operations, will focus on key topics such as disaster preparedness, emergency response protocols, and the international guiding principles of disaster risk reduction. Participants will also receive practical tools to enhance their ability to manage crises effectively.
The workshop, set to run for several days, brings together SoDMA staff from various departments as well as representatives from Qatar Charity. This collaborative effort reflects the shared commitment to improving disaster management capabilities and ensuring a well-coordinated response in the face of emergencies.
Qatar Charity, a longstanding partner of SoDMA, has played a significant role in supporting Somalia’s disaster management initiatives. The charity’s generous contribution to the training program underscores its commitment to enhancing Somalia’s disaster resilience.
Dr. Adan noted that the skills and knowledge gained from the training would have a long-term impact on SoDMA’s ability to manage disaster situations, with the ultimate goal of reducing the suffering of Somali citizens during times of crisis.
With Somalia increasingly vulnerable to natural disasters such as droughts, floods, and cyclones, this training initiative is part of SoDMA’s broader strategy to equip its staff with the necessary expertise to handle emergencies and to build a more disaster-resilient nation.
The successful implementation of this training program marks an important step forward in Somalia’s disaster preparedness and response capabilities, and highlights the ongoing collaboration between Somali institutions and international partners like Qatar Charity.
