Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reiterated the Somali government’s commitment to advancing the country’s democratic process, emphasizing the importance of implementing direct elections. In a speech at the British Embassy in Mogadishu celebrating the birthday of King Charles III, President Mohamud highlighted the government’s efforts to return political power to the people of Somalia.
“The government is working to ensure that the Somali people fully participate in agendas shaping their future,” said President Mohamud. “Elections are the most important pillar of democracy based on the wishes of the Somali people, and we are committed to ensuring they have the constitutional right to choose their leaders.”
The President also underscored the significance of strengthening Somalia’s democratic institutions and fostering development, calling for continued international support to ensure political stability and sustainable progress in the country.
However, the President’s remarks come amid growing political tension within the country. Some Federal Member States, including Jubaland and Puntland, have expressed opposition to the government’s plan for direct elections, raising concerns that the move could deepen divisions and lead to instability. Additionally, key opposition figures have voiced dissatisfaction with the proposed electoral reforms, warning that they could further polarize the political landscape.
Despite these challenges, President Mohamud called on Somalia’s international partners to stand by the government during this pivotal moment, highlighting the need for collective efforts to ensure a peaceful and democratic future for Somalia.
