KISMAYO, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in the port city of Kismayo this morning, where he was warmly received at the airport by the President of Jubaland State, Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe.”
The visit marks a significant political development, coming after weeks of behind-the-scenes efforts aimed at reconciliation between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the Jubaland administration. According to reports, the visit follows a direct request by President Hassan Sheikh to open a new page of dialogue with the Jubaland leader.
Reliable sources indicate that the discussions between the two leaders are expected to focus on several key issues, including:
• Recognition of the Jubaland elections, which the Federal Government had previously contested but is now reportedly moving to formally acknowledge.
• Ending hostile rhetoric and actions that have deepened political divisions, and charting a path toward mutual understanding and cooperation.
• Ensuring Jubaland’s active participation in the broader national political process spearheaded by the Federal Government, with details of this arrangement yet to be disclosed.

This is the second major reconciliation effort between President Hassan Sheikh and Ahmed Madobe. The first occurred during Hassan Sheikh’s previous term in office, when Ethiopia mediated between the two sides following intense political standoffs.
This time, sources close to the negotiations suggest that Kenyan intelligence officials have played a facilitative role in bridging communication between Mogadishu and Kismayo, paving the way for this high-profile meeting.
The talks are seen as a crucial step toward restoring unity and stability within Somalia’s federal structure, especially at a time when cooperation between federal and regional governments is key to ongoing security and state-building efforts.
Both sides are expected to issue a joint statement after the conclusion of their discussions in Kismayo, outlining agreed-upon steps for political collaboration and national cohesion.
