MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) marked a significant step forward in addressing labor migration with the official launch of the validation process for the National Labor Migration Policy. The event, inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Yusuf Mohamed Adan, took place in Mogadishu and will span three days.
The validation workshop is a collaborative effort aimed at refining the policy to improve the management of labor migration and tackle associated challenges, including irregular migration and the influx of returnees. These efforts align with international labor migration frameworks, fostering cooperation with neighboring countries and global partners to ensure adherence to international regulations.
Key stakeholders attended the event, including departmental directors from the Ministries of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Planning, and Women, along with representatives from the National Bureau of Statistics. International organizations such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) also participated, underscoring the significance of this policy on a global scale.
Minister Yusuf Mohamed Adan emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that it comes at a pivotal moment for Somalia. The recent tragedy involving a capsized boat carrying over 40 Somali migrants in the Indian Ocean, resulting in 28 fatalities, highlights the urgent need to address unsafe migration practices.
“This policy is not just a framework; it is a lifeline for our youth,” said Minister Adan. “By promoting safe and regulated migration pathways, we aim to reduce the risks posed by irregular migration and ensure our citizens can contribute to their communities safely and meaningfully.”
The workshop will focus on strategies to curb human smuggling, promote safe labor practices, and create opportunities for young Somalis within the country and abroad. This policy also seeks to address the socio-economic factors driving many to take perilous journeys in search of better opportunities.
The National Labor Migration Policy represents a beacon of hope, aiming to safeguard the rights of migrants while fostering economic growth and stability in Somalia and beyond.
