Cairo, Egypt – Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has arrived in Cairo this morning for a five-day official visit to Egypt, where he is expected to hold high-level talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and other senior Egyptian officials.
According to diplomatic sources, the discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and may culminate in the signing of a defense and security cooperation agreement between the two countries—an arrangement widely viewed as a strategic response to growing tensions with Ethiopia.
The visit comes shortly after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made a controversial statement asserting that his landlocked country “cannot remain without access to the sea,” arguing that Ethiopia deserves a maritime outlet for its exports. The remarks have stirred unease in Asmara and across the Horn of Africa, given Eritrea’s control of the Red Sea coastline.
Regional observers warn that the combination of Ethiopia’s rhetoric and Eritrea’s deepening military alignment with Egypt could escalate tensions and potentially destabilize the Horn of Africa, a region already grappling with multiple conflicts and humanitarian crises.
Further details on the content of the talks and any agreements reached between President Afwerki and President El-Sisi will be reported as they emerge.
