Baidoa, Somalia – The Baidoa District Administration on Saturday destroyed a large quantity of expired food products that had been confiscated from various markets in the city. The public destruction took place on the outskirts of Baidoa following a series of inspection operations led by the Department of Health and Sanitation under the local government.

The operation, aimed at safeguarding public health, was witnessed by the Deputy District Commissioner for Security and Political Affairs, Isxaaq Mohamed Teygaab, and the Deputy Commissioner for Administration and Finance, alongside the Director of the Health and Sanitation Department, Mr. Abshir Ali Hussein.
Officials said the expired food items were discovered during market inspections intended to ensure food quality and compliance with health regulations. Authorities emphasized that the crackdown would continue as part of ongoing efforts to protect consumers from health risks linked to expired and unsafe products.
Speaking during the exercise, local officials underscored the importance of regular market monitoring and collaboration between traders and the local administration to maintain hygiene and prevent the sale of harmful goods.

The move by Baidoa Municipality reflects a growing focus on public health enforcement and consumer protection within local administrations across Somalia. In recent years, similar operations have been reported in other urban centers, signaling a shift toward stronger municipal governance and accountability.
By taking visible action against expired goods, the Baydhabo administration not only reinforces regulatory oversight but also builds public trust in local institutions. Sustaining such initiatives, however, will require consistent inspections, public awareness campaigns, and legal mechanisms to deter repeat violations by traders.
